Watch It Backwards

…. And not let unseen tides pull us apart.’

Call me dramatic but there is something inherently beautiful yet exasperating about the film, ‘Never Let Me Go’. The film, which is the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiquo has single - handedly changed my opinion about the scope of modern day cinema. In an era of fast paced thrillers, sci fi fantasies and extravagant  and sometimes unbelievable Hollywood productions, it is refreshing to see a movie that is delightful mixture of the three. However, made from completely different angle. Never let me go explores the themes of love and a sort of ‘doomed destiny’ which is set in an alternative reality. In other words you can say it is a dystopian drama film, that follows the story of three children, Kathy, Tommy and Ruth. They are brought up in a deserted boarding school without any hint of possessing families. At this point, it is easy to assume they are orphans. But as the movie progresses and children turn to adults you begin to realise the secrets behind their existence. The story takes a darker twist, while these young adults begin to grasp the fact that this life their leading is not quite they’re own. They slowly come to terms with their inescapable fate i .e. of being the sacrificial lambs of the society. The fact is that they are cloned children, who’s main purpose is to be organ doners once they reach a certain age. As doners, it is obvious that their lives are short and once they begin to donate their health will deteriorate.

Amidst all of this is the story of a love. Tommy and Ruth fall in love and begin a relationship. While Kathy secretly pines for Tommy. Even though it’s a love triangle, and those tend to be messy. It is also sweet and naive. And all it’s awkwardness pulls at your heart strings. Although Tommy and Kathy eventually, get together they hope to live a few more years. There is a rumor among the community that if a couple are genuinely in love, they’ll be allowed to live a few more years…Tommy and Ruth search for answers and eventually get them. Devastatingly so, these rumors turn out to be not true, and Tommy eventually dies from his 4th donation.

Most scenes are shot beautifully and at some odd camera angles, but they work for the movie. The script is lovely with Kathy played by Carey Mulligan having the best dialogues. At the end of the movie, a shot where Kathy is staring into the fields around  the boarding school they were brought up she delivers her monologue. She ends it’s with these powerful yet heart wrenching words, “What I’m not sure about, is if our lives have been so different from the lives of the people we save. We all complete. Maybe none of us really understand what we’ve lived through, or feel we’ve had enough time. ”

TV shows that teach you a few things about life - ParteDeux

Dexter
Ah Dexter Dexter Dexter. What a show. Brilliant acting, brilliant actors and brilliant plot. What is not so brilliant? The police department Dexter is working for.  There you have it, a serial killer vigilante masquerading as as a ‘blood splatter analyst’ as a day job.  He does a good job of hiding his identity, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t slip up once in awhile. However, after 6 seasons of mayhem not once has anyone in the Miami metro police department acquired a clue about who Dexter really is. Except that one character in season 2 who got…killed off. This really does show us how supremely stupid the police can be. It effectively mocks the lack of their intellectual abilities, because the smartest characters on the show are either serial killers or well…. Dexter. Not the FBI, not Debra or any other D-E-T-E-C-T-I-V-E-S. Anyway, what does that teach you?  Humanity considers  policemen as stupid numskulls regardless of where they are. I wonder where that observation came from..not.

Pretty Little Liars
Ahaan! This show does promise a lot of suspense and thrill. Certain scenes of the show are actually scary and make you shiver, I kid you not. The gist of the story : four pretty teenage girls living in an upper-class neighbourhood are being blackmailed by a mysterious person called ‘A’, who aims at wrecking their lives through revealing their secrets and framing them for things they didn’t do.
Even though they’re being blackmailed, they continue to live their petty little lives while allowing this ‘A’ person to blackmail them. And instead of, i don’t know.. TELLING THEIR PARENTS OR THE POLICE they continue to be A’s puppets without taking any action. Being what you’d call ’ Young and reckless teenager’, these girls continue to live scandalous lives. For example, Aria the polished looking hippie chick begins having an affair with her English teacher. (that’s your cue to roll your eyes) . Anyway, this seemingly stupid behavior gets her in trouble when ’ A’ finds out. And the drama ensues.
Moral of the story : If you’re being blackmailed, it would be wise to TELL SOMEONE.

Breaking Bad

Even though this is a show about a high school chemistry teacher making and selling drugs with the help of his ex student.  I honestly think it’s about hope. One can only hope that when they have been diagnosed with cancer , they can transform themselves into drug-peddlers so their families don’t have to live on food stamps for the rest of their lives.  Really, it is a dazzling story of hope.

So, this is for all you terminally ill people. Why don’t you start some illegal business? Arms trade, drug trafficking? The money’s good and your family doesn’t really have to know …. especially when you’re brother -in-law is DEA Agent.

TV shows that teach you a few things about life.

Let’s face it. For the majority of us (young adults or not), American television has been the very crux of our lives. I don’t intend to be this dramatic, but well…. how many of you didn’t watch the OC? How many of you don’t continue  to watch reruns of ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S’ on TV?

That’s right. None.

Okay, simpler question. How many of you relate to a particular character on a show? How many of you thought Seth Cohen is the epitome of everything you want in a boyfriend? How many of you think Damon Salvatore is the sexiest thing since Brad Pitt in ‘Troy’?

Well, if you’re going to be stubborn. I’m going to call you a liar.

TV shows may be addictive and a pain in the butt, especially when you have deadlines to work with.
They may also infuriate the hell out of you, with their drama, suspense….and arghh those cliffhangers. (I bet your tearing your hair out just by the sight of the word)
Regardless, they all teach us a little something about life.

The Vampire Diaries

What worldly knowledge can this show possibly impart, you ask?

Well, for one. It can teach you how NOT to fall in love with a vampire.  With all the gory scenes of girls being bludgeoned to death you can only assume one thing: vampires really don’t want to be your prince charming(s). Yes yes, I know. The protagonist Stephan Salvatore has bit of that complex, but as the show progresses you can see what a monster he can really be. So, if you’re a vampire-loving troll who regularly posts yahoo questions on, ‘How to make a vampire fall in love with you’, this show is for you. Watch it regularly and realise this: mortal men are your best bet. Leave the supernatural ones for buffy.

Glee

This is for all those people who love singin’ their favourite show-tunes in the shower. Envisioning themselves, at the Grammy’s or whatever. This show does encourage you to bring out your inner freak. Every character has quirks and oddities making them people you can relate to. What the producers said was right, this show is all about loving yourself. So write a song, wear a weird outfit and dance in front of your mirror. You’ll be as free as a bird for those three minutes and forty seconds.

Bones/CSI/Castle/ SVU – Law and Order or any other crime drama

For all you aspiring serial killers/criminals out there! These shows have definitely something for you. Firstly, they can enhance your creative abilities by giving you fairly good ideas on how to go about your business. I can say that because, sometimes they give serial killers too much intellectual credit than they deserve.  So be smart and watch these shows carefully by paying attention to every detail. Remember, throwing your weapon in a dumpster close to your house or hiding it under your bed will simply not do. Do it the CSI way and burn it in acid, or something. And make sure it doesn’t stain your carpet. Your mom will hate that.

A film with heart.

The King’s Speech, a historical British film directed by Tom Hooper tells the true story of King George VI’s struggle with a stammer and how he overcame the fear of public speaking with the help of an  Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue. The main theme centres around the somewhat unusual yet endearing friendship shared between George VI played by Colin Firth and Lionel Logue played by Geoffrey Rush. This  friendship,  that starts off as a mere acquaintance between a Royal and a commoner turns into a lasting friendship that eventually changes both characters opinions on each other.

Another important theme of the film is it’s humanized version of British Royalty, by making George VI seem  like any other common man with common struggles.

Colin Firth delivers an astounding performance of a King struggling with his elocution. This makes the audience ache for him as a man who desperately wants to be what his country needs him to be. Geoffrey Rush plays the role of a quirky and witty man who has full confidence in his somewhat unorthodox methods, excellently. The lack of background music during certain scenes dramatizes the actors performances and adds value to the storyline and background. What really fascinates a viewer of this film,  is the lack of formality in the discourse between the two main characters. This is established by Logue’s character when he refuses to call George VI nothing but his family nickname ‘Bertie’. Tom Hooper, as a director has managed to disregard any kind of formality and grandeur that one would expect from the film and has instead made it more emotionally resonant.

The King’s Speech is an amalgamation of technical expertise and immaculate writing, acting and direction. A film filled with the richness of humanity and heart.

GoodBye Bafana

Billie August’s Goodbye Bafana is a 2007 drama film about the relationship between Nelson Mandela and his censor officer and prison guard, James Gregory. Dennis Haysbert plays Mandela while Joseph Fiennes plays Gregory. The film is based on Gregory’s book, Goodbye Bafana : Nelson Mandela, My Prisoner, My Friend.

The central theme of the movie regards the growth and change in the relationship shared by Mandela and Gregory. The movie carefully examines how under the influence of Mandela, Gregrory, a staunch believer in apartheid gradually begins to shift his ideals from the racist government.

As far as treatment goes, Joseph Fiennnes does a fine and convincing job of portraying Gregory’s gradual change of heart in suppost of Mandela’s Anti-Apartheid cause. His deliverance of the South African accent is also very impressive. Dennis Haysbert’s performance is nothing short of excellent as it radiates the compassion and intelligence of Mandela. Diane Kruger playing Gregory’s wife ‘Gloria’ believes this to be her best performance till date. Director Billie August has managed to maintain the audience’s interest throughout, despite the often changes of time periods in the film.

Goodbye Bafana is an enthralling, inspiration and thought provoking film that has managed to capture the essence of friendship and love aptly.

The Good Wife

As a self-proclaimed TV Show buff, it is only natural for me to say i love legal-drama shows.

I love Boston Legal. I salute thee with respect, Alan Moore.
However, i have to say ‘The Good Wife’ has me addicted. Never have i seen a lawyer sitcom this good, since ‘The Practice’

The really appealing part of the show is that it’s protagonist is a woman.  A woman named Alicia Florrick is played by Julianna Marguiles. She gave up her successful law career to raise her family. Not such a shiny example of feminism eh?

But wait, when her successful prosecutor husband gets involved in a sex-scandal she steps up and takes control. Snap.
First she dumps her husband…. ( She’s still married to him though)
Then she takes a job at a successful law firm, where she works as a junior litigator. Having spent years as a housewife, she now has to juggle both a professional as well as home life, being the sole bread-winner of the family. Eventually, because of her obvious skills at being a lawyer, the firm begins to appreciate her. And she becomes one of the most successful lawyers in Chicago. The show follows the businesses of the firm and Alicia’s life.

Of course, there is the sexy Will Gardner. Her boss and friend, who she also shares a sexual relationship with in season 3. He’s worth all the fuss, trust me.

The show is has everything expected from a lawyer sitcom and more. There is suspense and drama and a whole lot of sarcasm!

Supporting characters like Kalinda Sharma,  an overly sexual yet mysterious woman who is also the law firm’s in house investigator add a little more intrigue and flavour to the it.

5 Reasons why Gossip Girl is beginning to suck

1. Incestuous Cast : Okay, by middle of the 4th season you’ll come to realize that every character in the little circle has done it with atleast two or more people of the opposite sex. Is it just me or is the scenario completely sickening. Hmkay, I’m not judging. I’m just wondering why the show’s writre can’t just WRITE another bunch of characters into it. To be honest, i’m getting a little tired of BlairDanVanessaSerenaNateChuck.

2. What the hell happened to Blair’s wardrobe? : Blair Warldorf is supposed to be the Queen of the Upper East Side not the Queen of Drag. Whatever happened to her chic dressing sense? After the first season, all we’ve been seeing her in are THESE disasters..

And this

I’m all for the flower prints, but when you start making yourself look like a goddamn bouquet….Ugh.
Makes you wanna cry, doesn’t it?

3. No more Jenny humprey? How much ever i HATE lil J. The show really isn’t  ticking without her. I understand Taylor left the show because she has to go find herself in her music or whatever, but can’t she see the mistake she’s made? The show is crumbling without her annoying presence, i kid you not.

4. Dan, Nate and chuck = Snooze alert. They’re all boring me. All three of them have turned into senseless knobs, compared to what they used to be. That’s all.

Look how cute they were!

5. Serena can’t figure out which boy she likes. Blair can’t let go of her princess complex. Vanessa loves playing the innocent victim. Dan is just….dan, and somehow that bothers me. Nate is a useless, allowing himself to get played REPEATEDLY. Chuck’s indecisiveness is not sexy anymore

Haha, wow. I’m so DONE with GG.  Good riddance to once-very-good-now-terrible- rubbish.
